Aside from the Windows Operating System, name one piece of software that’s become totally synonymous amongst students, working professionals and academics? Microsoft Office. Just try to imagine a world without Word, Excel and (to probably 99% of work spaces) Outlook. It’s no wonder that Microsoft have such a stranglehold over academic centres and businesses alike. Here I’ll be taking you through a brief look at the new Office suite due for release in the first quarter of 2010. Bare in mind that this is based on just a few days of usage and is based upon the Office 2010 Technical Preview edition so there may be features which could be implemented into later release editions.

Here is just a quick screencast of some of the applications in Office. The observant among you will have realised that Outlook has deliberately been left out, the reason being that I need to find a way of screencasting this without showing the world my personal emails and account details. Apologies for the weird screen resolution, I didn’t realise i had the wrong one until all the editing was done and was posted to YouTube and all. But hopefully the screenshots will make up for it.

For some still largely unknown reason to me, Office 2007 was slated upon it’s release. Either this is because of the negative press of Vista dripping onto it’s other Microsoft products or because people genuinely didn’t like it. Either way, for the last few years the Development team for Office has focused on three main items which are Productivity, Simplicity and Design. Although Office 2010 will be released as a new package, it does seem to me like it’s more an evolution of the existing software rather than a revolution.

Ribbon System

The much criticised ribbon system found in Office 2007 is back and clearly here to stay in Office 2010. In fact it’s been rolled out to not only across the Office Suite (notably Outlook 2010) but also across much of Windows 7 (notably Paint and Wordpad). Personally I’ve held the opinion that this Ribbon system is a good thing in office applications because once you’ve gotten used to it, it makes things like updating your bibliography or inserting a chart an absolute doddle.

But note when I say once you’ve gotten used to it because i feel that’s exactly what has put people off updating to Office 2007. Yes things were good the way they were in previous editions of Office and people have come to live with the drop-down

menu way of navigating and clearly the saying “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” comes to mind. However I think that with proper prolonged use it’s not too hard to see the benefits of this new system of navigating. Of course if you feel that you’re still reluctant or struggling to use even Office 2007, there are utilities out there which mix the menu bar and ribbon systems.

Word 2010 Ribbon

New Splash Screen

Now with new software clearly in order to sell, the design interface has to look different in order to actually get copies off the shelves. There’s been a few changes notably to the ribbon(look up) and also to the splash screen and almost a fancy “start page”.

word splash

The thing i did notice about the splash screen is the almost innocuous looking minimize and close button in the top right hand corner. It really is not noticeable unless you do a screenshot and actually look at it. Truth be told, this splash screen only shows for a second on a computer with average specs so you probably won’t be needing it all that much.

Office Button Page

start page word

The most notable new change from a design aspect is without a doubt the new “Office Button” page. I’m not too sure what to call this exactly because it appears as a very bold and in my opinion, very appealing on the eye. However in order to reach this page, you’ll need to access it via the “Office Button” in the top left which are colour coded according to which application you use.

word button excel button outlook button

This colour co-ordination i think is really quite smart. Try looking at the images of the coloured buttons above and try and guess what applications they came from. Guessed yet? It’s Word, Excel and Outlook.

Anyways one thing which i am a little confused at with this new fancy pants page is why not make it load at startup. Would it not be easier for it load as soon as Word or Excel finishes loading? They do it in Publisher which works well, why not Word or Excel or Powerpoint? That said, the UI does look very impressive and for those who seemingly NEVER get the hang of printing, it does make life a little easier.

print

And here are a few screenshots of the Office button page in some of the other applications.

excel startoutlook start

powerpoint start

Jumplists

One feature that I couldn’t get working on my computer was that of jumplists. I think the following screenshot is fairly selfexplantory about what this does. Screenshot comes from Robert McLaw’s blog demonstrating jump lists in Outlook 2010.

outlook

Conclusions

There haven’t been any bugs just yet but it’s still early days and what I’d like to see implemented is more across the board implementation. Rather than a suite of applications that launch in a stand alone fashion, would it not perhaps be easier to be able to have the ability to get into Excel FROM Word and vice versa. Rather than having two windows open, maybe just the one where you could interact with both simultaneously. However beautiful the windows taskbar is, items can become impossible to manage when you have a few office documents running at the same time.

Clearly not much has actually changed from Office 2007 and this blog post isn’t a comprehensive review of all the new features but only a First Look. There were minor changes to placement of icons and different ribbon buttons here and there but as I mentioned above, they clearly wouldn’t want to constantly have to reinvent the office every 3 years causing customers to re-learn their computing habits. For that reason, this should be seen as more an evolution of Office 2007 rather than a revolution which in my book makes just a whole lot of sense.

Office Humour

I guess the guys over at Microsoft do have a sense of humour after all.

Download Free Office 2010 First Look Book

Courtesy of Microsoft

In mid-November 2009, Microsoft opened up access to the next iteration of its Office System. Office 2010 Beta Build 14.0.4536.1000 as well as the associated activation product keys continue to be available for download from the Redmond company. But as it usually is the case with the software giant, the company is accompanying Office 2010 Beta with a range of resources, the vast majority of which, just as the Build 14.0.4536.1000 bits themselves can be grabbed free of charge. It is the case of the “First Look: Microsoft Office 2010” e-book, which the Redmond company is delivering to customers as a free download.

“For a limited time you can download this free e-book without stepping through any registration. First Look: Microsoft Office 2010, by Katherine Murray, offers 14 chapters of early content, organized like so: Part I, “Envision the Possibilities,” introduces you to the changes in Office 2010 and shows you how you can make the most of the new features to fit the way you work today. Part II, “Hit the Ground Running,” focuses on each of the Office 2010 applications in turn, spotlighting the key new features and showing how they relate to the whole. Part III, “Next Steps with Office 2010,” zooms up to the big picture and provides examples to help you think through interoperability,” a Microsoft representative noted.

So far, Microsoft had been offering the free Office 2010 First Look book via Windows Live SkyDrive, but multiple users complained that they were unable to access the resource. The book is essentially a PDF weighing in about 10.5 MB. It appears that while some users have no problems downloading the file, others had no success at all. Microsoft is working to repost the download, and as soon as that happens I’ll provide and update, so watch this space.

“We're going to be placing the free ebook one a server with the Office group soon, but we wanted to get this out as soon as possible. Sorry for the download issues. We've heard that some people have had luck getting it this afternoon. We'll let everyone know when it has a new home if you can't download it this week,” noted Kim Spilker, from the Microsoft Press Marketing team.
Office 2010 Beta 14.0.4536.1000 is available for download here.

PCs that are capable of playing modern video games like "Crysis" come packed with brawny graphics cards and boatloads of RAM. If you must have only the sharpest big-screen imagery and smoothest gameplay, you'll have to shell out big bucks for a top-of-the-line machine. However, much less expensive alternatives are out there, if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of performance.
Personal computers designed specifically for gamers are getting more powerful and more affordable by the month.

They're bursting with multi-core processors, powerful video graphics cards and plenty of memory to give you the most realistic graphics and action.

Although it should come as no surprise that the computers that can run games consistently well are the ones at the high end of the price spectrum, I found machines for about US$1,000 that can give you decent play.

The cheapest ones, though, were disappointing when confronted with complex games that can push a system to its limit.

The 'Crysis' Benchmark

With prices coming down, PC gamers on the verge of buying a new machine must ask themselves: Does it look cool, and can it run "Crysis"?

"Crysis," a futuristic first-person shooting game, has steeper hardware requirements than typical games, which already tend to push the boundaries. So if your computer is powerful enough for "Crysis," it can likely run any game on the market.

The machines that run "Crysis" well have powerful graphics cards and multi-core processors -- essentially several processors on a single chip working in synch.

These computers also have a generous amount of random access memory, or RAM, which is key to letting games to run smoothly. The myriad computations a game requires each second are primarily made with data uploaded on the fly to the available RAM on your computer. The more you have, the more data your computer can access quickly.

High-Flying Falcon

The Falcon Northwest FragBox
The Falcon Northwest FragBox

In my tests, Falcon Northwest delivers the best machines when price is no object.

At $3,856, Falcon Northwest's diminutive FragBox is a serious ding to the wallet, but it packs twin graphics cards for multiple display support, 12 gigabytes of RAM and an Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Core i7 processor rated at cool 3.06 gigahertz -- all in a box that's much shorter than the typical tower PC. At that price, you also get a 24-inch Samsung high-definition LCD display.

The FragBox ran "Crysis" and another processor hog, "Red Faction: Guerrilla," without a hitch. These are two of the most demanding games on the market because of their detailed graphics and complex action sequences.

The FragBox also scored well in benchmark tests I conducted using software from Futuremark, which measures graphics rendering and other processing tasks at various display sizes and quality settings.

The CyberPower Maelstrom
The CyberPower Maelstrom

Put simply, the FragBox can run the most complex games at the most extreme settings.

Cheaper Thrills

Contrast that with something at the low end of the price spectrum: the $499 Maelstrom from CyberPower.

It's a full-sized tower unit that has a rugged, futuristic appearance.

This unit comes with an AMD (NYSE: AMD) Athlon 2.8 GHz processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM.

That's one-sixth the memory offered by the FragBox.

There is noticeable lag if you're attempting to play games on a large display at full screen and in high resolution with a paltry amount of RAM.

I had to settle for playing "Crysis" and "Red Faction" in a smaller window; the dreamy full-screen experience was a no-go here.

The CyberPower Gamer Xtreme 4200
The CyberPower Gamer Xtreme 4200

CyberPower did come through strong, however, with another tower model priced $500 higher at $999. The Gamer Xtreme 4200 sports an ATI (Nasdaq: ATYT) Radeon high-definition graphics card and the latest Intel processor from the Lynnfield line, a Core i5 running at 2.66 GHz.

More importantly, the Gamer Xtreme 4200 has double the RAM -- at 4 gigabytes. That helps support Intel's new chipset, and the results showed.

The benchmark test scores revealed high frame rates per second when rendering graphics. I was able to play "Crysis" and "Red Faction" full-screen without any issues.

The iBuyPower Chimera
The iBuyPower Chimera

At a similar price, iBuyPower offers a variety of models, including the $999 Chimera. That machine performed admirably in tests. I didn't experience any performance drops when playing "Red Faction" at 1680 x 1050 resolution, an above average display quality.

Bumping it up to 1920 x 1080, however, led to some lag and stuttering as I scanned the horizon for enemies during the game .

The Chimera comes with a decent ATI Radeon graphics card, but if you're going to spend an extra $150 on an upgrade, that would be the likely candidate. The chipset is solid, and the 4 gigabytes of RAM is fine. It just needs a stronger graphics card to take it to the next level.

Not of This Earth

If you simply must have a laptop specifically for your gaming needs, Dell's (Nasdaq: DELL) Alienware M17x is a smart buy, but it will set you back $1,799 at its cheapest configuration. I tried a tricked-out model that sells for $3,899. The result? I was able to play "Crysis" over coffee at a cafe in high definition at the most extreme settings, something few other laptop toters can boast.

One drawback of the Alienware laptop is size. It's a heavy beast that you would never want to carry around in a backpack or briefcase. It's more of a desktop replacement than a traveling companion.

The Alienware M17x
The Alienware M17x

The M17x has an Intel Core2 Extreme Quad processor operating at 2.53 GHz, sitting alongside a powerful graphics card to deliver those high-frame rates for "Crysis" and similar games . It comes with 4 gigabytes of RAM, and all the components are fine-tuned to deliver a high-end, high-quality gaming experience.

In summary, if you've got $1,000 or less to spend, I'd recommend something from CyberPower. The company builds very aggressively styled, affordable machines that can still give you decent play. If money is no object and you want a machine that looks nicer than a Ferrari, Falcon Northwest is the trend setter.

Anything less than $700 runs the risk of feeling slow and outdated once the next incarnation of "Crysis" comes out. If you're at all a serious gamer, you're better off spending a little more and planning ahead.

Michelin: a simulator of tire traction

"Testing of the simulator available to persons in possession of driving license. On the stand co-hosted by Oktal and Michelin which features a brand new Mini Cooper, the tone is intentionally accountability. Very far from the world of Need for Speed or Mario Kart, and despite its fun at first sight, the demonstrator hosts a booth designed to educate drivers on the risks of driving. The program specifically: the awareness of risks associated with tire wear and grip conditions deteriorated.

Imagina 2009 - Michelin

While Last year the Renault Twingo sought to test the human factor in different situations of the road (analysis of the steering wheel, the physiology of the driver, his heart rate ...), the simulator wanted this year by Michelin was more of a duty of disclosure. He and pilot through a basic interface voluntarily embarked on a UMPC.

The driving simulation is made possible by a set of devices offered by different partners and orchestrated by Company Oktal developing the software solution and offers manufacturers and equipment manufacturers (Renault, PSA, Nissan, Audi ...) solutions of turnkey simulation. In the case of our little Mini Cooper, it has removed all the motor organs to replace them with software. The shocks are in turn replaced by an actuator that mimics the acceleration of the vehicle. The simulator is placed on a mobile platform adjustable to simulate the movements of the car. These cash flows can reduce what experts call "evil simulator" adding that movement helps the brain to take its bearings, which is beneficial for people particularly sensitive.

Bibus: a 3D printer even more precise

Imagina 2009 - Bibus
Last year, during the 2008 edition of Imagina, we have experienced an amazing 3D printerCapable of reproducing small objects through a printing technology by adding material (here powdered gypsum). Already particularly valuable for professionals called upon to design prototypes, these 3D printers powder yield gradually replaced by a new generation of machines even more precise.

What are the benefits of these new printers that use an acrylic resin?
  • The ability to create pieces thinner, only 0.6 mm 2 mm cons in the case of the printer dry to the last year. In return, the deadline for printing is growing.
  • The absence of post-treatment: while parts of the year should be sanded and then hardened using resins exhibit good resistance to manipulation, nothing like here, where the parts are perfectly smooth and solid at the end of the printer.
  • The ability to make games with moving parts.
Imagina 2009 - Bibus

The new models make the moving parts of high precision

  • The possibility of using several different consumables with varying levels of flexibility.
  • The ability to create his own material since the range of materials that exist. Between a rigid plastic and flexible, you can create a dozen variants. Simply assign materials to areas of the 3D model so that the object is then carried out at once. This possibility is the preserve of high-end models (250 count 000 for the model Connex 500).

The printer scans proceeds by left / right place for this area. It is equipped with two print heads working simultaneously: one filing the photosensitive acrylic resin layer of 28 microns, the other gel that supports the construction. The return movement of the printheads allows for its share of polymerizing the layer has been deposited at 70%. Polymerization, ie the transformation of a liquid into a solid, is obtained by means of UV. This ensures good adhesion with the next layer and we are given the same time ensuring a solid object whose strata are nested into each other.

Imagina 2009 - Bibus

Two rounds of gel and two resin cartridges offer a range of 36 hours of printing

The only step which the new technology can not yet overcome is the residue of the cleaning gel used to help build the room. Each machine is delivered to this effect with a cleaning station ( "Water Jet") equipped with a sort of "Karcher". For a small room as the lizard shown below, it takes about two minutes of manual cleaning. Finally a word on the cost of the material that may represent a barrier. The resin is trading at 250 euros per kilo and freezing to 110 € / kg, which brings us to the top of dinosaurs about 300 euros.

Once the part is completed, remove the resin which has helped build

What are the next evolution of these technologies? The novelty might again bring in materials, whose range is expected to evolve. After the resins rigid, flexible, clipables or bio-compatible (used for hearing aids for example), the innovation could come from a fusible material which would open new avenues for professional dental or jewelry for example. Immersion: A multi-cube for 3D space

Keyboard, mouse, joystick ... interfaces designed to allow us to drive an application or we move within a game sometimes show their limits when it comes to exploring the complex universe in 3 dimensions. Hence solutions such as 3D mouse from 3Dconnexion or the "CubTile" Immersion society to whom we have already an interactive table and a device for tracking eye.

What exactly this cube light and mounted on a desk that we could see this year on the show? Equipped with five sides, the CubTile takes advantage of technologies similar to those of the touch table already mentioned. The illumination is finally using an infrared system. Inside the cube, the camera analyzes the shadows and retrieves information concerning the position of the fingers. All multipoint multifaceted what the CubTile, its use is less "dramatic" than Table Touch which has for its part of electrical interface.

The faces have multiple assignments. The top, most flexible, allows turn zoom, move, rotate around an axis, translations, etc.. As for sides, they facilitate the tilt up / down. Ultimately, this unique interface allows the use of degrees of freedom that we would not have a keyboard / mouse.

A marketable version is already planned for September 2009. The cube will be provided with a software solution that will open a product, capable of being operated by a wide range of applications: over only viewing a three dimensional type Google EarthBut also the manipulation of prototypes and therefore not learning to flying a helicopter, etc..
